Vice Admiral Soonil Bhokare was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 1984.  The Admiral obtained his watch keeping certificate onboard the Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant following which he joined the Submarine Arm in 1986.  In Jan 1987 the Officer was deputed to Riga (USSR) for Submarine Training and was the commissioning crew of INS Sindhuratna. The Flag Officer specialises in Navigation and Direction and has served as the Navigating Officer of five submarines and has been the Executive Officer of three Submarines.  He attended the Defence Services Staff Course, Wellington (India) in 1996.
The Flag Officer qualified the Submarine Commanding Officer’s Course in 1998 and thereafter commanded three frontline submarines of the Indian Navy, namely INS Sindhughosh, Sindhudhvaj and Sindhushastra.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2004 and attended Army Higher Command Course in the prestigious Army War College in India. He also commanded the Submarine Squadrons as COMCOS (WEST) and the base INS Vajrabahu from 2006 to 2008.  The Flag Officer has also commanded a guided missile Frigate, INS Beas from 2008 to 2009.  The Officer successfully completed Defence and Strategic Studies Course in the renowned Australian Defence College, Canberra. On completion of the course, he carried out the duties of Chief Staff Officer (Operations) in Headquarters Eastern Naval Command at Vizag.  He was promoted to flag rank on 01 Sep 12 and took over as Flag Officer Submarines on 22 Sep 12. The Flag Officer subsequently commanded Eastern Fleet from Oct 15 to Oct 16. He was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral and took over as the Commandant, Indian Naval Academy on 20 Oct 16.
VAdm Soonil Bhokare is married to Meena who is a Yoga therapist and Consultant. They are blessed with a daughter who is currently working with the Taj Groups of Hotels in Mumbai. The Flag Officer enjoys playing golf and is an avid reader.
